Restore Data from a Backup File with a BK File Extension

Use this procedure to restore data from backup files that use the BK file extension.

You can restore data to the original project, configuration, report, batch report, sort, and filter, or to a new or different file.

Note: You can only back up and restore files to which you have access. Cobra requires an exclusive lock on a project to successfully restore backup files. If the backup files are being restored to a project that is locked by another user, Cobra will not proceed with the Restore process.

For additional guidelines, see File Extension and Restore Guidelines.

To restore data from a backup file with a BK file extension:

  1. Click > Manage > Restore.
  2. In the Open dialog box, use the drop-down list to select the type of file that you want to restore.
The Open dialog box displays all files to which you have access based on the type you select. For example, if you select Project Backups (*.bkcp), the Open dialog box displays all available projects to which you have permission to access. You can select multiple files.
Note: If you select a legacy backup file, see Restore Data from a Legacy Backup File.
  3. Select the file(s) that you want to restore and click Open.
    • If you select Project Backups (*.bkcp), proceed to Step 4.
    • If you select Report Backups (*.bkcr) or Configuration Backups (*.bkcc), proceed to Step 5.
  4. The Select Files to Restore dialog box displays only if you are restoring a single project or master project.
    • If you are restoring multiple files and the files do not exist yet, the Restore Progress dialog box displays and the process proceeds immediately and completes. Proceed to Step 7.
    • If you are restoring multiple files and a file(s) with the same filename already exists, Cobra prompts if you want to overwrite the existing file(s). Proceed to Step 6.
In the Select Files to Restore dialog box, perform the following steps:
    1. In tree view, select the ancillary files associated with the project that you want to restore. Alternatively, you can click Select All or Deselect All.
    2. In the Restore Project as field, enter the name of the new project or select a different project to which you want to restore the selected project.
    3. Select the Use bulk data loader option to perform the Restore process with Bulk Data Loader.
Note: When restoring projects with a very large time-phased data, select this option to run the process much more quickly. This option is hidden if you are using Cobra with a SQL Server database or with an Oracle database in an n-tier setup. For more information, see File Restore with Bulk Data Loader.
    4. Click Restore.
      • If the file does not exist yet, the Restore Progress dialog box displays and the process proceeds immediately and completes. Proceed to Step 7.
      • If a file with the same filename already exists, Cobra prompts if you want to overwrite the existing file. Proceed to Step 6.
  5. The Restore dialog box displays only if you are restoring a single file.
In the Restore dialog box, perform the following steps:
    1. Select a different file using the Lookup dialog box or enter a new filename in the field.
  6. In the Save As dialog box, do one of the following steps:
    • Click Yes or Yes to All to overwrite the existing file(s) and proceed with the Restore process. The file(s) will be updated.
    • Click No or No to All to exclude the existing file(s) from the Restore process. The file(s) will not be updated.
    • Click Cancel to cancel the Restore process.
Important: As the existing file with the same file name maybe be overwritten, it is recommended that you name your file appropriately and pay attention to where exactly you are saving the file.
  7. Click View Log to display processing and any error information.
